There are 2 version of editors you can choose from when adding your product description, category description, defined pages, EZ-pages and newsletter.
By default, it is using rich text editor call HTMLarea. The other alternative is plain text editor.
HTMLarea is sufficient if all you need is basic text formating. However, most clients already have the content ready in their existing documents such MS Words or previous web pages. The common mistake done by most clients is they copied the text directly from the original source and pasted it to the HTMLarea. It is always ended in undesireable result. This is due to the original source formating is not compatible with HTMLarea. It is better to remove all the text formating from the original source.
The remedy is to copy the text from the original source and paste it to Windows notepad. Then only you copy the text from the notepad and paste it to the HTMLarea. That way, you paste only the text to the HTMLarea. You can redo all the formating up to your heart content later in the HTMLarea.
Even though HTML knowledge is not necessary, it helps if you know some so that you can do some fine tuning on your end result. http://www.w3schools.com/html/ is a good place to start.
